Framework 13 Pro OCuLink Mod

The Framework 13 Pro OCuLink Mod is a community exploration of adding OCuLink (Optical-Copper Link) external GPU connectivity to the Framework Laptop 13 Pro (Intel Core Ultra Series 3 / Panther Lake) by utilizing its PCIe Gen 5 M.2 NVMe slot. Announced by community member Wisky_Pro in August 2026, the project is in a very early stage with the creator awaiting hardware delivery and planning testing once the laptop arrives1.

The Framework Laptop 13 Pro is Framework's first system with PCIe 5.0 support, featuring an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 5 x4 SSD slot capable of over 14,000 MB/s read/write speeds2. This makes it uniquely suited for OCuLink eGPU experiments, as PCIe Gen 5 x4 provides equivalent bandwidth to PCIe 4.0 x8 (~128 Gbps raw), which the creator argues is sufficient for GPUs up to an RTX 5080 in real-world use1.

Background

The Framework 13 Pro's Panther Lake platform brings PCIe Gen 5 to the M.2 slot for the first time in a Framework 13. The creator's research indicated that a PCIe Gen 5 x4 connection provides "WAY BETTER" performance than any USB-based solution, including Thunderbolt 5, due to the elimination of protocol tunneling overhead. This effectively gives PCIe 4.0 x8 bandwidth, which some desktop GPUs use natively1.

The ADT-Link K43SG is a passive M.2 NVMe edge-to-PCIe x16 connector adapter that supports PCIe 5.0 x4 full speed. While OCuLink connectors do not natively support PCIe 5.0, the K43SG uses a soldered cable design rather than an OCuLink connector for best signal integrity13.

Challenges

The project faces several known challenges documented in the community thread1:

1. Storage Conflict

The Framework 13 Pro has only one M.2 slot, which must be sacrificed for the OCuLink connection. The OS must run from external storage. The creator plans to use the Thunderbolt 4 interface for the OS drive, but notes that booting Windows from USB4/Thunderbolt is problematic — Windows To Go is deprecated, and standard Windows does not officially support booting from USB. Some registry hacks may work but the creator has "no high hopes." Linux is expected to boot from an external drive without issues1.

2. Cable Routing

Ideally, the OCuLink connection should be routed without disassembling the laptop and without destructively modifying the bottom chassis. The creator is considering using the left speaker cutout as a cable exit point, but is uncertain whether an OCuLink female port can fit in that space1.

3. Signal Integrity

PCIe 5.0 via OCuLink requires "an insane level of integrity." Any additional connection point or port on the cable route significantly impacts signal integrity. The creator is weighing whether mounting an OCuLink female port on the speaker cutout introduces too much signal degradation. The K43SG's soldered cable design (no OCuLink connector) was chosen specifically to minimize connection points1.

4. No Hot-Plug

Unlike USB4/Thunderbolt eGPU solutions, an M.2-based OCuLink connection does not support hot-plug/unplug — the laptop must be powered off to connect or disconnect the GPU. The creator considers this acceptable for their use case (traveling gaming), as disassembly is required to unplug anyway1.

Status

Early Stage

This project is in a very early exploratory stage as of August 2026. The creator has not yet received their Framework 13 Pro hardware and has outlined the plan and known challenges. No prototypes, testing results, or design files have been published yet. The creator intends to share results in the community thread once testing begins1.
