Sonnet Breakaway Box 750ex eGPU Enclosure
The Sonnet Breakaway Box 750ex is a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosure built around an Intel DSL6540 controller (PCIe 3.0 x4 to Thunderbolt), pairing a 750W power supply with support for high-end double-width graphics cards. It is documented working with a Framework Laptop 13 (Ryzen 7840U) driving an RTX 4070 on Windows, with users achieving the full 32 Gbps PCIe tunnel using an active Thunderbolt 4 cable1.

Framework Compatibility
| Model | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Framework Laptop 13 (Intel 11th/12th/13th Gen) | Works | TB3/TB4 |
| Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040) | Works1 | Confirmed 32 Gbps with active TB4 cable |
| Framework Laptop 13 (Intel Core Ultra) | Works | TB4 |
| Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen AI 300) | Works | Use a USB4 port |
| Framework Laptop 16 | Works | 70W PD for iGPU-only use |
| Framework Laptop 12 | Incompatible | No USB4/Thunderbolt hardware |
With the stock TB3 cable, this setup was limited to 16 Gbps (USB4v1). Reaching the full 32 Gbps PCIe tunnel required a certified active Thunderbolt 4 cable (Cable Matters / Belkin / Orico). USB4 hosts have stricter cable requirements than older TB3 systems1.
The DSL6540 controller tops out at PCIe 3.0 x4 (≈32 Gbps). For a newer GPU with PCIe 4.0 support you may prefer the ADT-Link UT3G (ASM2464, PCIe 4.0 x4) to extract more of the card's capability — though the USB4 link itself remains the ultimate ceiling.
