Framework Embedded Controller GUI (fw-ec-gui) is a graphical interface for controlling the Framework Laptop 13's Embedded Controller (EC), developed by community member Yisroel Newmark (GitHub: boredom101). Written in Python with PySimpleGUI and tkinter, it provides a point-and-click interface for fan speed control, LED color selection, and battery charge limiting by wrapping DHowett's fw-ectool.
The original Framework Laptop, launched in July 2021. It was Framework's first product, shipping with 11th Gen Intel Core processors. The laptop received a 10 out of 10 in iFixit's repairability score. It was available as a fully assembled laptop or as a DIY Edition with RAM, storage, OS, and WiFi module uninstalled.
Launched in May 2022, the 12th Gen Intel update brought Alder Lake processors with a hybrid architecture (P-cores + E-cores). It shipped with an upgraded back panel, and a 12th Gen Upgrade Kit was offered to allow 11th Gen users to upgrade their laptops. Pre-ordering for Australia opened in September 2022.
Announced in March 2023 at the Framework Next Level event alongside the Framework Laptop 16. This model brought Raptor Lake processors and adopted the "Framework Laptop 13" designation to distinguish it from the new Laptop 16. Also introduced were a higher capacity 61 Wh battery, a matte display option, and a Cooler Master case to house Framework motherboards. Battery life saw a significant 40% uplift in PCMark's battery test over prior Intel designs, with an additional 13% improvement when upgrading to the 61 Wh battery.
Announced in February 2025, this is the latest Framework Laptop 13 model featuring AMD's Zen 5-based Ryzen AI 300 series processors with RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics. It supports up to 96 GB of DDR5 memory and introduces a new 2.8K 120 Hz IPS display option. The design retains Framework's emphasis on modularity, with most parts compatible with earlier releases. DIY edition starts at $899, pre-built at $1,099.
Framework System TUI (framework-tool-tui) is a terminal-based dashboard for monitoring and controlling Framework laptop hardware, developed by community member Mykhailo Nedokushev (GitHub: grouzen). Built in Rust with the ratatui TUI framework, it provides a snappy interactive interface for battery management, privacy toggles, brightness controls, USB PD port monitoring, and more — all from the terminal.
